Adoption Letter

Thank you for your interest in adopting one of our beautiful greyhounds. Most of the greyhounds that come through the AGA adoption program are retired racing greyhounds; however, we also take retired brood mamas and puppies that have been deemed not likely to race early in life. It is my belief that there is a home for every greyhound …it is our job to find the perfect match.

Step 1

You should take time to determine whether or not a greyhound is the right dog for your family.  Do your research and read books about the breed.  Two suggestions are:  Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan and another is Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood.  There is also the AGA Adoption Handbook available for download!  If you have children we require that you read Childproofing Your Dog by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson.  Please note, we do not adopt Greyhounds to families with children age 8 and under. Families with children age 8 and under are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Step 2

There are several ways to submit your application. You can complete it and submit it at any meet and greet; you can complete it through the website and either email it as a PDF to adoption@austingreyhounds.org or fax it to 512-895-9150. You can also send it through the USPS.

When you submit your application, you will be required to send a $50.00 non-refundable application deposit.  The deposit is applied to your total adoption fee when you finalize the adoption.  The balance of the adoption fee is required when the adoption is finalized.

Step 3

Once we receive your application, we will conduct a background check and set up a time for an interview. We want to get to know you so that we can best match a hound to your home. We will ask you questions about your home environment and level of activity. Also, we will determine whether a male or female would best suit you. Please note that we do not adopt out by color. We do, however, make every effort to match your request when considering a greyhound for your home. After the interview we will schedule a home visit. We will usually bring a greyhound with us just to make sure your home is greyhound friendly. We will make any needed suggestions in order to prepare for your greyhound.  Once your home is ready for a greyhound, we will arrange a date to meet and finalize the adoption.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at info@austingreyhounds.org. Thank you again!
