Abby's Story

Abby-1   Abby-2

As the sun broke over the horizon, on that damp April morning in Lorena, Texas, LZ Miss Quick H looked down at the litter of ten puppies she'd just had and gave a deep sigh of relief. Her owner was excited at the possibility of what lay ahead with this new gift he'd just received. There were two girls and eight males. They were so cute. Wandering, staggering, and trying to find their way in this new world they'd just entered. Nestled in the middle was one JG's Abby. A red fawn by the luck of the draw. Little did she realize the adventure she was about to undertake.

It seemed earlier than normal when the food bowls began to clank, but I'd had a long ride the night before and the food seemed to smell good. It tasted even better. And, who was that strange man feeding me? I'd not seen him before. And what about that crate? It was laid out different than mine at home. There was also this strange sound of like water splashing. As I would find out later, I was about to make my debut in the racing world at Corpus Christi Greyhound Track race number twelve. A handler came and took me to the weigh in room to get the once over. It was a lot bigger and brighter than the one at the Texas Greyhound Association training track in Lorena. I got weighed and found out that I was a svelte sixty-three pounds. Then, they put my favorite racing silk on, the red number six. As I headed to the starting box, I began to look for my brothers and sisters. I always loved running off and leaving Ariel and Fiddler in the dust. But, I quickly discovered that it was a whole lot noisier and there were far more people that had come to watch me run. Didn't think much more about it and set my sights on that today was going to be the day that I'd catch that darned ole lure. The box sprung open and off I tore. To my shock and amazement, it wasn't any of my brothers or sisters I was running with. To my left, was this big black male by the name of New Addition. He reminded me of my brother Bad Boy. On my right, was a red female by the name of Bonnie Rhett. She ran like the wind. I spent the remainder of that 31.57 second race battling ATD Mabeline and Sps Carefree. I finished in the money, in fourth place. My racing career had officially begun. The career spanned twenty-four races. Ten at the Corpus Christi Track and the remainder at Valley Greyound Track. It is located in Harlengin, Texas. There were four wins and I finished in the money in twelve races. My last race was in March of 2001 and I went out on top by finishing that race in first place. My winning time was 31.47 seconds. My owner then took me home to the farm in Lorena.

Two thousand and four brought a whole new adventure for me. I was introduced to a handsome young Irishman by the name of "Larking About". We were the proud parents of eight little ones. Sad to say that none of them made the track. They all still had our undying love and devotion though.

March of 2007 brought still another adventure to my life. I was invited by the nice folks with Austin Greyhound Adoption to come with them and find a real home with lots of love, hugs, and kisses. My owner had kind of neglected me on the farm and I had a terrible time at the dentist. Lost a total of thirty-eight teeth. Now, I'm all healthy and out eat the Borzoi that I'm presently living with. I'm also running around like a two year old again. Well, maybe not a two your old but I give the three year olds here a run for their money. Figure that I've got at least seven or so more years left to run, jump, and play. But, I still have the urge to chase fuzzy things that run. So may a cat or small dog as a partner wouldn't be such a wise idea. Kids are wonderful.

Thank you for sharing a bit of my life. If you'd like to add further to my adventures, please feel free to contact AGA and just ask to see "MOM".
